Many words seem to express different meanings in different contexts. The most obvious examples are indexicals like ‘I’ and ‘here’, which refer to different people and places depending on the context in which they are used. Philosophers have suggested that many more terms might be sensitive to context, however. These include other ordinary terms like 'Tall', 'Flat', and 'Red', but also philosophically significant terms like ‘Knowledge’.
In this module, we’ll consider how we should model context-sensitivity in language, the extent of context-sensitivity in language and thought, and what the consequences are for philosophical theory.
