In this course, we will discuss and compare some of the main accounts of second language acquisition, with a particular focus on speech sounds. Through readings, discussions and weekly exercises, students will develop an idea for a new experiment or study to follow up on the ideas discussed during the course. It is not required to actually carry out an experiment for this course, but the research plan should be developed in detail. Towards the end of the course, students will present their research plan in pairs. As a group, we will ask questions after each presentation to help the presenters further develop their research plans. At the end of the course, students will write a brief research report in the style of a short conference proceedings paper.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
