(Kirchen-)geschichtliche Themen stehen bei den Schüler*innen nicht hoch im Kurs. Das Lernen vor Ort und an Gegenständen ermöglicht hier neue Zugänge. Gerade für Kirchengeschichte bieten sich außerschulische Lernorte an. Das Seminar möchte dies als Werkstatt für die Frage "Kirche im Nationalsozialismus" bearbeiten. Als Beispiel wird der Kirchenkampf gewählt, der gerade in Westfalen entsprechende Orte bietet. Die Wewelsburg in der Nähe von Paderborn wollte die SS zu ihrer zentralen Ordensburg ausbauen. Deshalb wurde dort das KZ Niederhagen eingerichtet. In Dortmund spielt neben dem Gedenkort Steinwache, wo Menschen, die Mitglieder der Bekennenden Kirche waren, inhaftiert waren, die Marienkirche eine Rolle. Dort fand eine Westfälische Bekenntnissynode statt. Schließlich der Ortsteil Barmen in Wuppertal: hier fand die Bekenntnissynode 1934 statt, auf der die Barmer Theologische Erklärung verabschiedet wurde.
