Die Figur des Doktor Faustus erscheint gegen Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts erstmalig auf der Bühne der Weltliteratur: die ‚Historia von Doktor Johann Fausten‘ (1587) erzählt vom Pakt mit dem Teufel, vom großen Ruhm wie auch vom schlimmen Ende, das das Leben des Teufelsbündners nimmt und wird schnell (und länder- bzw. sprachübergreifend) zu einem frühen Bestseller des sich entwickelnden Buchmarktes.
Mehr durch die ‚Historia‘ als durch Goethes Dramatisierung inspiriert, verfasst Thomas Mann zwischen 1943 und 1947 den Roman ‚Doktor Faustus‘, in dem er das Schicksal des ‚deutschen Tonsetzers Adrian Leverkühn‘ erzählt und auf einer Metaebene eine Verbindung zu dem Teufelspakt herstellt, den die Deutschen 1933 mit dem Nationalsozialismus geschlossen haben.
Im Seminar werden genannten Werke in ihren zeitgenössischen Kontext eingebettet, darüber hinaus wird die Gestaltung der Teufelsbündner (wie auch die der Teufelsfiguren) mit erzähltheoretischen Mitteln analysiert.
