300852 Monströse Babies, archaische Mütter und autoritäre Väter - Die Familie im Gruselfilm (S) (WiSe 2020/2021)

Contents, comment

Ob aggressive Väter (The Amityville Horror; The Shining), alleinerziehende Mütter (Carrie; The Exorcist, The Ring oder The Babadook) oder unheimliche Kinder (The Ring; The Sixth Sense): Die Familie stellt einen der beliebtesten Aushandlungsort für das Grauen im Horrofilm dar. Schon Robin Wood hielt in seinem einflussreichen Aufsatz „The American Nightmare“ (1986) zum Aufbau des Horrorfilms fest:

„The formula provides three variables: normality, the monster, and crucially, the relationship between the two. The definition of normality in horror is in general boringly constant: the heterosexual monogamous couple, the family, and the social institutions (police, church, armed forces) that support and defend them. The monster is, of course, much more protean, changing from period to period as society’s basic fears clothe themselves in fashionable or immediately accessible garments.“
