Die Res gestae divi Augsti – der Tatenbericht des vergöttlichten Augustus – ist die „Königin der Inschriften“ (Theodor Mommsen). Und das aus mehreren Gründen: Kein anderes epigraphisches Zeugnis ist vergleichbar umfangreich. Augustus schildert darin aus eigener Perspektive seinen Aufstieg zur Macht und damit zum ersten Kaiser in der Geschichte Roms. Dieses unschätzbare Egodokument wurde allerdings nicht als Manuskript auf Pergament oder Papyrus überliefert, sondern eingemeiselt in einer Tempelmauer entdeckt. Das Monument Ancyranum - wie die vollständigste Version nach dem Fundort Ankyra genannt wird – bietet einen griechischen und lateinischen Text. Wir werden den griechischen Text im Original lesen und anhand einschlägiger Passagen wesentliche Aspekte des frühen Prinzipats erarbeiten.

Griechische Sprachkenntnisse sind für die Teilnahme unbedingt erforderlich. Der Text wird im Lernraum zur Verfügung gestellt. Ferner sollte eine systematische altgriechische Grammatik zur Hand sein (Kaegi, Ars Graeca, Bornemann-Risch, Typoi u.a.) sowie natürlich ein griechisch-deutsches Lexikon (Gemoll, Benseler, Menge-Güthlin Langenscheidt).
