230344 English(es) in the British Media (S) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

Resulting from extensive language contact throughout its history, the British Isles nowadays display a high degree of cultural, multi-ethnic and, consequently, linguistic diversity. In this course, we will explore dimensions of this diversity on the British Isles through the lens of the media. In a diachronic sense, the term 'media' comprises historical, contemporary and emerging forms of public discourse, such as newspapers, radio, television, film as well as social media, among others. This course is particularly interested in the representation of English(es) or English varieties in written and spoken media discourses stemming from the British Isles.
In the first part of this course we will learn about the basic terminology to describe regional variation in language use from a sociolinguistic perspective. For example, we will learn to differentiate between accents, dialects and the notion of standard language. In the second part, we will apply our knowledge and explore variation in British media discourses which are shown to represent Britain's multilingual and dialectal makeup.
