300770 Researching Transnational Families in Mediatized Social Worlds (S) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

This course consists of a series of in-class activities, including reading and discussion of academic articles and case studies, methodological exercises, and individual and/or group self-study activities.

Requirements for participation, required level

The research seminar invites students to investigate transnational families in mediatized social worlds. Transnational migrant families are those whose members are geographically separated across international borders. For these households, digital media and new communication technologies have become essential tools for maintaining relationships, staying connected and 'doing family' despite geographical separation. Based on this research focus, the first class of this course will introduce the main conceptual and methodological tools useful to study transnational families in mediatized social worlds. Participants will then be encouraged to design and conduct their own empirical research, individually or in small teams. Throughout the summer term, students will conduct their own data collection and present their findings towards the end of the semester.
