Leben wir (noch) in einer „Leistungsgesellschaft“? Ist das „Leistungsprinzip“ gerecht? Was zählt als „Leistung“ und wer zählt als „LeistungsträgerIn“? Kann man „Leistung“ messen und vergleichen? – Die regelmäßige Wiederkehr dieser und ähnlicher Fragen in öffentlichen und sozialwissenschaftlichen Debatten zeigt, dass „Leistung“ eines der schillernden und umstrittenen Konzepte der modernen Gesellschaft ist. Im Seminar werden wir uns in historischer, theoretischer und empirischer Perspektive mit dem Begriff der „Leistung“ beschäftigen. Wir werden herausarbeiten, wann und wie das Konzept der „Leistung“ erfunden wurde und welchen Veränderungen es im Zeitverlauf unterworfen war. Wir behandeln klassische und neuere Versuche, „Leistung“ und das „Leistungsprinzip“ soziologisch zu fassen. Außerdem erarbeiten wir einen Einblick in aktuelle sozialwissenschaftliche Debatten zu (quantifizierender) Leistungsmessung und -bewertung wie Ratings und Rankings.
