Dieses interdisziplinäre Seminar beschäftigt sich mit dem monumentalen (Dokumentar-)Film Shoah (Frankreich 1985) von Claude Lanzmann, einem Meilenstein der Filmgeschichte wie der Oral History der Shoah. Im Verlaufe des Seminars wird der 9,5-stündige Film in seiner Gesamtheit gesehen und aus verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchtet. Die Studierenden setzen sich mit der Entstehungsgeschichte des Films und Claude Lanzmanns Verständnis des Films auseinander. Sie diskutieren Lanzmanns Methoden und Filmästhetik sowie die Relevanz des Films für die Holocaustforschung und die Interpretation der Shoah. Besonderes Augenmerk wird dabei auf die Komplexe Trauma und Zeugnis sowie Trauma, Geschichte und Erinnerung gelegt.

English abstract
Considered a milestone in the history of film and oral history, this interdisciplinary seminar focuses on Claude Lanzmann's documentary Shoah (France 1985). Throughout the seminar, students will view the 9.5-hour film in its entirety and analyze it from various perspectives. The course will cover how the film came to exist and how Claude Lanzmann interprets the film. The course will consider Lanzmann's methods and cinematic aesthetics, as well as the film's relevance to Holocaust studies and the interpretation of the Shoah. The complexes of trauma and testimony as well as trauma, history and memory will receive special attention.

Requirements for participation, required level

The course is open to all interested students who are willing and psychologically prepared to confront and deal with testimonies of extreme experiences of violence. Additionally, students are expected to read challenging academic texts in English. Prior knowledge of history and film studies is beneficial but not required for participation.

Der Kurs richtet sich an alle interessierten Studierenden. Er setzt die Bereitschaft und psychische Konstitution voraus, sich mit Zeugnissen extremer Gewalterfahrungen zu konfrontieren und auseinanderzusetzen. Darüber hinaus wird von den Studierenden erwartet, anspruchsvolle und voraussetzungsreiche wissenschaftliche Texte in englischer Sprache zu lesen. Vorkenntnisse aus Geschichts- und Filmwissenschaft sind natürlich hilfreich, aber keine Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme.
