220177 Medieval Common Law: An Introduction (AngSelb) (WiSe 2022/2023)

Contents, comment

What is medieval common law?
The seminar wants to provide an introduction to the development of the English Common Law during the Middle Ages. After a preparatory meeting, the students will familiarize themselves with this aspect of English medieval history by reading an introductory volume on the topic (Hudson, The formation of the English common law: Law and society in England from the Norman Conquest to Magna Carta, 1996) and preparing a short essay.
This introductory seminar should be studied together with the seminar on "People at Court: The Development of the English Common Law in the Middle Ages" (220091) which focuses on actual court sessions and the available documents.
Questions about the syllabus will be answered during the preparatory meeting.
