250404 Difference categories in the inclusive classroom: Local and global perspectives from Germany and Canada (S) (WiSe 2021/2022)

Contents, comment

This course will introduce students to inclusive education and approaches to creating classroom contexts for students with diverse needs. Inclusive education has become a global norm, so that the debates on inclusive school and classroom development also have stronger international and transnational references.
The instructors, Dr. Shiva Zarezadeh-Kheibari (University of Alberta, Canada) and Mark Schäffer (University of Bielefeld) would like to work in small cooperative groups. We will adopt a global perspective on questions of inclusive and exclusive practices in Canada and Europe, thereby reflecting differing terminologies, e.g. ‘inclusion’, ‘integration’, ‘special needs’ and reflect the German classifications of ‘sonderpädagogischer Förderbedarf’.
Within an inclusive education context, all teachers are expected to support the range of students who will be in their classrooms. As such, this course is designed to facilitate the students’ ability to design classroom instruction and classroom environments to enhance learning for all students. In addition, we will address many difference categories that are relevant to inclusive teaching and learning. Next to differences surrounding dis/ability and special needs, we will have a closer look at their intersections with gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and other categories. Moreover, a significant aspect will be the adaptation of teaching for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Students will view and study assigned course readings (both text and video) throughout the course and apply knowledge to in-class activities and assignments in zoom sessions. In this seminar we use, among other digital tools, the innovative Perusall platform in order to provide space and opportunity to engage with each other around articles and videos and let the students develop an understanding for the different perspectives offered by international research. We will give the students an introduction to the platform during the first sessions for a good basis for their assignments.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

In this seminar, we communicate mostly in English: Submissions (Studienleistungen/Prüfungsleistungen) can be made in German as well as English. One of the aims of this course is to enable the students to train their English and expand their existing knowledge along the global topic of the course. The lecturers will be happy to provide you with language support. In any case, we can always use German, should there be the need for it.

Studienleistung:
Students write a total of three reflections of approx. 400 words each on one major content block of the seminar and upload them in LernraumPlus. There will be thematic choices. More details will be announced in one of the first sessions.
Prüfungsleistungen:
Term papers (‘Hausarbeit’) or portfolios can be written as ‘PL’. Individual counselling on these forms of examination will be offered during the seminar and in digital office hours. More details will be announced in one of the first sessions.
