Abstract
The field of development studies addresses very different societal issues, policies and theoretical approaches. Moreover, these challenges, political measures and theories can be distinct on different societal levels and world regions.
Therefore, the seminar provides a systematic overview of major global, regional and local trends in the field and is therefore divided into four main realms.
The first part approaches the term of development, its manifold understandings and the role of development sociology in focusing the societal dynamics.
The second part of the seminar focuses on current major developmental issues. These are limited to four central topics poverty and inequalities, rural development, climate change and human migration.
The third part considers the most relevant development theories and embraces especially recent approaches from both the global North and South.
Based on this background, the fourth part critically addresses current international development policies, especially those framed by the sustainable Development Goals.
