230442 Living and Learning in an Age of Digital Transformation - Implications for English Language Education (S) (SoSe 2024)

In this course, we will first examine effects of digital transformation from various disciplinary perspectives. In particular, we will examine born-digital texts (such as e.g. social media feeds, video games, live texts, etc.) including those generated by AI as complex texts that are embedded in a broader sociocultural context. After approaching a definition of born-digital texts for our seminar and discussing some theoretical considerations, we will explore different approaches to using born-digital texts in the English classroom. While keeping in mind curricular policy frameworks, our approach to exploring the potential of born-digital texts for ELT will particularly be based on understandings of digital literacies. In this course, we will examine how such an understanding of living in an age of digital transformation and learning with its artefacts affects classroom practices. You will design and present your own units of teaching with born-digital texts, which will help you prepare for (or review) your practical teaching term and provide the theory to your teaching experience.
