Die Vorlesung führt in die soziologische Theorie ein, indem sie klassische und aktuelle Theorien in ihren Grundzügen erläutert und anhand einiger ausgewählter Leitfragen zueinander in Beziehung setzt.
Wir beginnen mit den sogenannten Klassikern der Soziologie (Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim, Max Weber, Georg Simmel), die vor über hundert Jahren zentrale, die Soziologie bis heute prägende Fragestellungen entwickelt und erstmals systematisch behandelt haben: Wie ist soziale Ordnung möglich? Was sind die zentralen Merkmale der modernen Gesellschaft? Welche Entwicklungsdynamiken kennzeichnen die moderne Gesellschaft? Im zweiten Teil betrachten wir sodann an ausgewählten Theorien, wie diese Fragestellungen später aufgegriffen, weiterentwickelt und beantwortet wurden: von Rational Choice-Theorien über (Neo-)Institutionalismus, Pierre Bourdieu, Anthony Giddens, Niklas Luhmann, Michel Foucault bis hin zu aktuellen Entwicklungen in der Praxistheorie und postkolonialen Theorie. Dabei sollen die Grundzüge der soziologischen Theorietradition ebenso sichtbar werden wie grundlegende Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen Beiträgen zu dieser Tradition.
Zugleich will die Vorlesung für eine besondere Qualität aller soziologischen Theorien werben: dass sie uns die Welt noch einmal neu und anders zu sehen erlauben.
