230222 Reading Jane Eyre: Text, Context, Criticism (S) (WiSe 2023/2024)

Contents, comment

When Charlotte Brontë published Jane Eyre in 1847, the novel instantly sparked popular interest. Up until this day, the novel resonates with readers and critics alike. This course will be an in-depth exploration of Brontë’s most famous novel: we will examine the text for its central themes such as gender roles, love, religion, and disability, but also investigate its sociohistorical context and far-reaching literary and cultural repercussions. This will include the discussion of Jean Rhys’ novel Wide Sargasso Sea, as well as selected adaptations on screen and on the page. Our reading of the text(s) will be informed by a range of critical approaches such as feminism, Marxism, and postcolonialism.
