250277 Exploring and Comparing Education around the World: What is going on beyond the German borders? (S) (SoSe 2023)

Contents, comment

As a lead-in, there is a brief overview of international relations theories in general. Also, systematic reflections about general characteristics of education and school take place. Knowledge of the functionality of national systems is important in any discussion of comparative education. It is highly significant in the sense that knowledge about the political, cultural, social, and historical antecedents of contemporary education systems helps contextualizing them in their current environment. Additionally, theoretical perspectives and the philosophical ideas that education are based on are crucial in widening this understanding. Furthermore, a reflection about comparative research as a highly challenging research method will be part of the lead-in as well. Preceding from these reflections, the course looks specifically at selected national education systems in different regions of the world.

Through the course, students learn and reflect about educational systems in different countries through a variety of means which are set up digitally. The course focusses on gathering knowledge as well as developing a deeper understanding of schools around the world which is based on a multilayered reflection of global variances as well as similarities.

The course will be held bilingually in adaption to the needs of the participants. Therefore, only basic English knowledge is needed. Also, the assessment can be submitted in German or English. Further information about the course will be given in the first session and in the Lernraumplus. Also you can contact lehre-vogt@uni-bielefeld.de for questions at any time.

A place allocation procedure will take place in this event. Please inform yourself about the procedure here: https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/fakultaeten/erziehungswissenschaft/studium-und-lehre/einrichtungen/bie/faq-stundenplan/
