Migration ist derzeit ein Schlüsselthema der gesellschaftlichen Debatte in Europa. Auch seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts spielte Migration in Deutschland eine wichtige Rolle. Allerdings unter veränderten Vorzeichen. Hier ging es vor allem um die Migration von Deutschen in die Amerikas. In diesem Zusammenhang arbeitet das Seminar Fragen der Migrationspolitik, der Migrations(hinter)gründe, der kulturellen Integration und der Erinnerung deutscher Migration auf. Regional fokussiert das Seminar vor allem den Cono Sur (Argentinien, Chile, Süd-Brasilien), wobei immer wieder Bezüge nach Nordamerika erstellt werden.
An erster Stelle steht ein kultur- und sozialgeschichtlicher Zugriff auf dieses Feld transnationaler Verflechtungsgeschichte. Dabei werden aktuelle Ansätze der Migrations-Geschichte diskutiert. Darüber hinaus werden aber auch Formen der kulturellen Erinnerungsarbeit, wie Museen (Auswandererhaus Bremerhaven) oder Film („Die andere Heimat“) thematisiert. Eine Exkursion in das Auswandererhaus Bremerhaven ist geplant.
