Das Seminar behandelt mit Simone de Beauvoir eine Klassikerin der feministischen Theorie und Geschlechterforschung, eine Protagonistin und Philosophin des französischen Existenzialismus sowie eine Autorin von Romanen und Autobiographien. In einem interdisziplinären Seminar (Literaturwissenschaft, Gender Studies, Philosophie, Geschichtswissenschaften) möchten wir konkrete Verbindungen herstellen zwischen der Geschichte feministischer Theorie und des Feminismus im 20. Jahrhundert, dem autobiographischen Schreiben und der fiktiven Literatur. Zu diesem Zweck beschäftigen wir uns eingehend mit dem Hauptwerk von Simone de Beauvoir, „Das andere Geschlecht („Le deuxième sexe“) (1949), wobei wir seinen grundlegenden Gedanken, aber auch seiner Wirkungsgeschichte und Aktualität nachgehen möchten. Begleitend lesen wir Auszüge aus Beauvoirs Autobiographien (z.B. „Memoiren einer Tochter aus gutem Hause“ (1958); „In den besten Jahren“ 1960; „Der Lauf der Dinge“ (1963)), werten diese als historische Quellen aus und rekonstruieren die autobiographischen Schreibformen. Ergänzend dazu beschäftigen wir uns mit dem biografischen Schreiben über Simone de Beauvoir (exemplarisch: Toril Moi, Simone de Beauvoir. Die Psychographie einer Intellektuellen, 1997). Abschließend steht einer ihrer Romane auf dem Programm: „Sie kam und blieb“ („L’invitée“) (1943) oder „Die Mandarins von Paris“ (1954).
