Nach einer Einführung in die lateinamerikanische Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts sollen Periodisierungsmöglichkeiten diskutiert werden. Für das 19. Jahrhundert werden dann Quellen und Dokumente zur Nation- und Statebuilding, zur Modernisierung, zum Extraktivismus, zur Einwanderung und zur politischen Entwicklung einzelner lateinamerikanischer Länder übersetzt und eingeordnet. Für das frühe 20. Jahrhundert sollen Text- und Bildquellen zu Themen wie dem 1. Weltkrieg, der Weltwirtschaftskrise, der importsubstituierenden Industrialisierung und dem klassischen Populismus aufgearbeitet und globalgeschichtlich kontextualisiert werden. Im Schlussteil der Veranstaltung werden dann lateinamerikanische Quellen und Dokumente des späten 20. und frühen 21. Jahrhunderts zu Militärdiktaturen, Neoliberalismus und Neopopulismus im besonderen Fokus stehen.
