Die Soziologie schuldet die vielleicht prominenteste Pointierung ihres theoretischen Ausgangsproblems, nämlich die Frage, wie soziale Ordnung möglich sei, Thomas Hobbes. Dem schien so gut wie jede Ordnung, soweit sie unsere Sicherheit und Unversehrtheit zu garantieren vermag, besser als der Bürgerkrieg. „Seeking peace!“ war ihm deshalb die Forderung des Tages.
Talcott Parsons hat dieses „Hobbes´sean Problem of Order“ unserem Fach im letzten Jahrhundert zwar erneut in abstracto serviert, aber die darauf gelieferten Antworten, selbst Parsons´ eigen, liefen zumeist und bis heute auf eine petitio principii, auf ein begging the question, auf ein kulturalistisches Zukleistern der von Hobbes identifizierten materiellen Widersprüche und ihrer gegenstandsimmanenten und -konstitutiven Antizipation hinaus. Es sollte sich deshalb lohnen noch einmal bei Hobbes selbst nachzulesen, wie er das Problem fasst und wie er sich einen Ausweg vorstellt. Dabei wird sich zeigen, dass er das Problem durchaus nicht nur als ein motivationales Problem, als eine Frage mangelhafter Interessenharmonie oder gar als eine Art Gefangenendilemma betrachtet, sondern auch als ein diskursives und kognitives, als eine Frage unwahrscheinlicher Kommunikation.
