Specialised didactic training
The degree programme places a strong focus on subject-specific didactic training, which enables students to apply their knowledge effectively in the teaching of Spanish. This practical component supports the development of teaching skills that are important in different school requirements.

Teaching Experience Semester
A central element of the degree programme is the Teaching Experience Semester, in which students can try out their role as foreign language teachers in real school environments. This practice-oriented element is prepared and reflected upon by an accompanying didactic modules, which strengthens the connection between theory and practice.

Interdisciplinary perspectives
The degree programme integrates various disciplines, including literature, cultural and media studies as well as linguistics and history. This interdisciplinary orientation promotes a comprehensive understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures and their social contexts.

International experience
Students have the opportunity to spend several months abroad in a Spanish-speaking country. This international experience not only promotes language skills, but also intercultural competence, which is of great importance in today's globalised world.
Following their bachelor’s and master courses, as well as the subsequent induction period, teachers take on a varied, complex and socially responsible role. They shape teaching and learning processes, support and encourage pupils in their personal development, and empower them to shape their own futures as mature and responsible citizens. Career prospects are generally positive, as the demand for qualified teachers is set to continue into the future. Key factors influencing future recruitment prospects include the type of school and subject combination chosen, regional demand, personal mobility and flexibility, as well as decisions and priorities in education policy. Assessments of recruitment prospects are available, for example, from the Ministry of Education of North Rhine-Westphalia.
When choosing subjects, it is also important to take your own interests into account so that you can later teach the subjects you are interested in with enthusiasm. Furthermore, considering the age of the pupils in the respective types of school is helpful in making an informed decision.

Access to the Master of Education is granted to those who can provide evidence that they have a first university degree which has a standard period of study of at least six semesters and qualifies them a for profession. Whether the first degree provides suitable access also depends on the kind of teaching qualification to be pursued.

A first degree for a subsequent Master of Education programme with the professional goal of a teaching qualification is generally given if the Bachelor degree was completed at Bielefeld University (according to the Bachelor Examination Regulations (German ‘BPO’) for the 2011 study model) with a corresponding orientation (professional goal and choice of subjects).

Other degrees may be accepted if applicants can provide evidence of academic achievements for the intended teaching qualification that are substantially equivalent to those of the above-mentioned bachelor degree. For example, these can be degrees

  1. granting a teaching qualification for a different school type,
  2. with a different choice of subjects,
  3. with a subject-specific orientation (i.e. degrees that do not encompass a teaching qualification)
  4. a degree from another university.

Access to the Master of Education may be subject to the completion of alignment studies. The fulfilment of the access requirements is checked in each case during the application procedure.

The exact regulations for the access procedure can be found in the examination and study regulations for the Master programme (see navigation).

Access to the preparatory service (German ‘Referendariat’) requires knowledge of two foreign languages. This is usually provided via the German ‘Abitur’. The Bielefeld School of Education (BiSEd) counselling service will respond to further questions.
