Workplace Studies handeln davon, wie die an einer Situation Beteiligten miteinander und mithilfe von technischen Artefakten eine Arbeitsaufgabe bewältigen. Das Seminar führt in diesen Forschungsansatz erstens ein anhand eines Vorläufers aus der deutschen Industriesoziologie, anhand von Texten zum theoretischen Hintergrund und anhand von exemplarischen Studien. Zweitens werden im Rahmen des Seminars die Teilnehmenden selbst Beobachtungsprotokolle schreiben, in der Gruppe auswerten und präsentieren.
