Aufbauend auf die im BA-Studium erworbenen fachdidaktischen Kenntnisse nimmt das Vorbereitungsseminar Kriterien guten Geschichtsunterrichts in den Blick und widmet sich verstärkt der Frage, wie diese empirisch überprüft werden können. Dazu lernen die Studierenden einerseits durch die Beschäftigung mit einschlägigen Studien die Vielfalt geschichtsdidaktischer Fragestellungen kennen und erwerben andererseits durch konkrete Übungen erste Kenntnisse in der qualitativen und quantitativen Datenerhebung und -auswertung für das aus dem Seminar heraus erwachsende Studienprojekt im Praxissemester. Daneben bildet die fachlich und fachdidaktisch fundierte Planung einer Unterrichtsreihe einen weiteren Schwerpunkt des Seminars.
