Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, einen Überblick über die Geschichte der Vormoderne, mit einem Schwerpunkt in der Frühen Neuzeit. Die Vorlesung soll Studierenden ein ‚Koordinatensystem‘ für das Studium der Vormoderne geben, daher liegt der Schwerpunkt eher auf größeren Strukturen (z.B. Wirtschaft- und Gesellschaftssystem, Kommunikation, Religion als grundlegendes Bedeutungssystem) und auf längerfristigen Prozessen (z.B. Europäische Expansion, Staatsbildung, „Wissenschaftliche Revolution), und weniger auf konkreten Ereignissen und Daten. Die Vormoderne, und vor allem die Frühe Neuzeit, wird dabei auch immer wieder in Bezug auf die Moderne thematisiert, Brüche und Kontinuitäten werden ebenso diskutiert wie Zäsurprobleme. Ist die Frühe Neuzeit das Musterbuch der Moderne oder stellt sie seinen Denkraum für Alternativen zur Verfügung?
