230493 Virtue and Desire in the Times of Victoria (S) (SoSe 2017)

Contents, comment

In this class we will take a critical look at conceptions of sexuality and gender as well as (sexual) morals and beliefs in 19th century Britain. After laying down a basic understanding of Victorian society and its gender dynamics, we will approach the topic – rather unconventionally – with the help of pornographic texts and images produced in the period in order to gain deeper insight into the Victorian mind. Of course, this means that the class will deal with explicit content, so please be prepared to deal with that. There will be lots of time for discussions so as to give you the chance to mentally stretch your legs and practice speaking English with your peers. I will elaborate on the Studienleistung during our first session.
