Historical sociolinguistics is a relatively new discipline and combines questions and approaches from historical linguistics and sociolinguistics. After an introduction and overview of both of these more established disciplines, we will analyse data from different periods of the English language and apply sociolinguistic questions and methods to this data. We will also discuss the limitations and problems of these methods when it comes to analysing historical data.
