In the age of photoshop, we have learnt to distrust photographic 'evidence' of historic events. In the past, painting was the (even less reliable?) medium to represent events that had been (or were meant to be) significant in the narratives a community told itself about itself. We will start by asking when the English/British began to represent their own history visually and go on to analyse and interpret these images in order to understand the ideologies and the propaganda that influenced their creation and artistic design. Paintings always tell a truth - the question is, what about?

In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
