Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die in Rom vertretenen hellenistischen Philosophenschulen (Akademie, Peripatos, Stoa, Epikureismus) anhand der Lektüre einschlägiger lateinischer Texte. Zentrale Problemstellungen, deren Lösungsansätze wir in den Texten verfolgen, sind, warum der Mensch zum Glück strebt, worin es besteht und wie er dorthin gelangen kann.
Bei der Lektüre und Interpretation der Texte wird die Frage im Zentrum stehen, welche Intention die jeweiligen Autoren mit ihren Texten verfolgen, die in der Regel nicht auf ein Fachpublikum zielen.
