Attention, perception, memory and action control are basic cognitive functions of human and non-human primate brains. The key idea of the seminar is “the ”working memory’’ sketched here is not genuinely a memory. Rather, it is an attentional system that interacts equally with perception and with (long-term) memory.” This citation comes from an article of Klaus Oberauer (2009, Design for Working Memory, Psychology of Learning and Motivation, 51, page 92). In course of the seminar, we will read, present and discuss this landmark paper. Each session of the seminar will cover one subsection of the paper (arranged chronologically) plus one or two recent journal articles that specify, verify or falsify the central messages of the subsection.
The seminar language will be English – basic (not advanced) skills in reading, writing, presentating, and discussing are presupposed. Three key review papers (see below, Literaturangabe), supplemented by original research papers, will be read, presented, and discussed. Suggestions for alternative viewpoints and experimental tests are very welcome. Each participant should moderate one seminar session including a presentation (powerpoint, etc.) and a discussion section.
