Mit Entstehung der Städte und der Zunahme der Verschriftlichung weiter Lebensbereiche fand im 13./14. Jahrhundert auch im norddeutschen Raum ein Schreibsprachenwechsel vom Lateinischen in die Volkssprache statt. Das Mittelniederdeutsche gewann vor allem in seiner Funktion als Sprache des Rechts und als Lingua franca der Hanse an Bedeutung.
Ein Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, die Seminarteilnehmer zu befähigen, mittelniederdeutsche Texte zu lesen, zu verstehen und zu übersetzen.
Darüber hinaus werden folgende Themen im Zentrum des Seminars stehen:
- Geschichte des Niederdeutschen
- Lexik und Grammatik des Mittelniederdeutschen
- Binnengliederung des Mittelniederdeutschen
- Mittelniederdeutsche Literatur und ihre Gattungen mit Schwerpunkt auf dem ostwestfälischen Raum
- Mittelniederdeutsch als Rechtssprache.
