The accession of King Charles II. in 1660 ended the period of Civil Wars and the Puritan Interregnum, bringing back the splendour of absolutist monarchy to Britain. The ensuing decade, however, was also characterised by major ambivalences in politics, religion, mentalities, and culture. Writers and filmmakers have been attracted by the extravagances of the monarch himself and his courtiers, by the first impulses of modernisation (as e.g. the foundation of the Royal Society), and by the ways in which Britain dealt with the aftermath of two decades of political, religious and social upheavals.
In this seminar, we will read a novel (Rose Tremain: Restoration), watch, analyse and interpret two movies (The Libertine, Stage Beauty) and a TV series (The Power and the Passion) and some texts and documents from the Restoration period itself.
Please buy your own copy of Rose Tremain's novel "Restoration". (Students without a copy of the book will not be allowed to participate.)
