Mit den Worten „Und wer die Dummheit beging, diesen Stil die ‚Neue Sachlichkeit‘ zu nennen, den möge der Schlag treffen!“ sprach sich Erich Kästner (1899-1974) in der zweiten Hälfte der 1920er Jahre gegen die Betitelung einer der zentralen literarischen Strömungen der Weimarer Republik aus. Nichtsdestotrotz – und nicht ohne Grund – wird er vonseiten der Forschung bis heute als einer ihrer wichtigsten Vertreter gehandhabt. Im Seminar werden wir uns zunächst mit den historischen wie ästhetischen Prämissen und Dimensionen der neusachlichen Literatur auseinandersetzen. Inwiefern sich diese in Kästner’schen Texten wie etwa seinem Kinderroman "Emil und die Detektive" (1929), seinem Zeitroman "Fabian. Die Geschichte eines Moralisten" (1931) und seiner „Gebrauchslyrik“ widerspiegeln, soll im Anschluss daran untersucht werden.
