This course is a seminar that introduces the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and their role in promoting corporate accountability for human rights impacts. It examines the legal framework and core principles of the UNGPs, focusing on the State duty to protect human rights, the corporate responsibility to respect human rights, and access to effective remedies. The course also explores the relationship between the UNGPs and other international and domestic legal frameworks, as well as recent developments in human rights due diligence and corporate responsibility. Through the analysis of legal instruments and selected case studies, students will develop a critical understanding of the legal and practical challenges of business and human rights.
