220068 Orientalismus in Theorie und Bild (S) (WiSe 2026/2027)

Die 1978 erschienene Abhandlung „Orientalism“ des Literaturwissenschaftlers Edward Said dekonstruierte die in der europäischen Geistesgeschichte entwickelte Trennung zwischen „Orient“ und „Okzident“ als machtpolitische Strategie. Entlang dieser künstlich geschaffenen Binarität wurden dann Eigenschaften und Episteme wie Rationalität und Sinnlichkeit, Fortschritt und Dekadenz, Logos und Mythos verteilt. Der „Orient“ und der „Okzident“ wurden im Zuge dessen homogenisiert und essentialisiert.

Das Seminar befasst sich mit Saids Denkfigur und Theorie und versucht diese nachzuvollziehen und in historische Gegebenheiten einzubetten. Spezifisch soll dann die Rolle der Kunst in diesem Orientalisierungsprozess beleuchtet werden: Berühmte Maler wie Rembrandt, Ingres, Lyotard, Delacroix uvm. bedienten sich orientalisierender Motive in ihrer Kunst und Selbstdarstellung.

Wir werden weiter analysieren, inwiefern auch eine sich im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert etablierende Kunsttheorie und Disziplin der Ästhetik auf die Etablierung eines „Anderen“ setzte, um den europäischen Raum machtpolitisch zu stabilisieren und aufzuwerten.

Das Seminar wird sich außerdem mit Exotizismen der europäischen Kunst auseinandersetzen, die auch bis ins 19. oder den Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts reichten, wie Chinoiserien, Japonismus oder der Ägyptomanie.
