Die Veranstaltung gibt einen Überblick über wichtige wissenschaftstheoretische Positionen und Kontroversen sowie bedeutende methodologische Konzepte in der empirischen Sozialforschung. Dabei werden ausgehend von wissenschaftstheoretischen Grundlagen Verbindungen zu historischen Kontroversen (z.B. Positivismusstreit) aufgezeigt. Weiterhin sind verschiedene methodologische Positionen (z.B. Verstehen und Erklären), die vergleichend anhand von Texten zur Diskussion stehen, Bestandteil des Seminars. Fragen der Modell- und Hypothesenbildung sowie Kausalität sollen erörtert und auf ihre Realisierbarkeit im Forschungsalltag reflektiert werden.
