Laurence Sternes zwischen 1759 und 1767 erschienener Roman 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman' zählt zu den ungewöhnlichsten und einflussreichsten Werken der europäischen Literaturgeschichte. Mit seiner Abschweifungskunst, seinen spielerischen Erzählverfahren und seiner beständigen Reflexion über die Bedingungen des Erzählens stellt der Roman seine eigene Form und das Erzählen an sich infrage.
Im Seminar wird der Roman vollständig gelesen und in seinem literaturhistorischen Kontext erschlossen. Dabei werden zentrale Aspekte wie Selbstreflexivität, Erzählerfiguren, Leserlenkung, Komik, Intertextualität und die Materialität des Buches untersucht. Ergänzend zur Primärlektüre werden ausgewählte literaturwissenschaftliche Positionen diskutiert sowie Rezeption und Nachwirken des Romans in der europäischen Literaturgeschichte diskutiert.Ziel des Seminars ist es, die Studierenden mit einem Schlüsseltext der englischsprachigen und europäischen Literatur vertraut zu machen und sie zur eigenständigen Analyse komplexer Erzählstrukturen zu befähigen. Darüber hinaus erwerben sie Kenntnisse über zentrale narratologische Fragestellungen sowie über die Geschichte des Romans als literarischer Gattung.
