In this seminar we introduce theoretical as well as empirical approaches to the study of gesture and non-verbal communication. As a foundation, we provide an overview over the most influential theories and approaches to gesture studies and non-verbal behaviour: perspectives from linguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics and anthropology. After discussing techniques for empirical data analysis, the students will analyse research data according to their own research questions and present their results. Our specific aim is to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between students of various disciplines, in order to shed light on the topic of gesture studies from various angles.
