In the aftermath of the Ferguson riots of August 2014, racial discrimination has become a hot topic again in the United States. The discussion of race in general is known to vary temporarily and in different systems, in the political and public discourses of the Americas. Consequently, the individual definition of such categories gains meaning through human interaction and intercultural contact. Since literature and media emerge as spaces of negotiation and expression of racial identity, this seminar will cover writing, visual arts, music and film on the topic, with a focus on group discussions and close reading in class. Taking an inter-American perspective, the course aims at mapping a series of approaches to racial identity as they emerge in literature and media in the U.S. and the Caribbean. Students can obtain up to 3 credit points, or a Studienleistung in this seminar.
