Im Bereich der Verbrektion zählt Kasus zu den syntaktischen, semantische Rollen zu den semantischen Forderungen von Verben. Beides zusammen ergibt die sogenannte Argumentstruktur.
Einen Schwerpunkt des Seminars bildet das Verhältnis zwischen syntaktischer Funktion, Kasus und semantischen Rollen. Bei diesem Verhältnis lassen sich prototypische Beziehungen feststellen, die regelhaft zu erfassen sind. Auch die Abweichungen vom prototypischen Fall können systematisch erklärt werden.
