Thie course is designed to introduce and analyse three novels of the period between 1890 and 1900
(the so-called fin de Siècle) that are representative for three different literary movements of the 1890s, i.e. Aestheticism, Naturalism, and Exotism/Colonialism. The course thus aims at giving a fairly comprehensive picture of one of the most exciting periods of English literature, the "Yellow Nineties".
Texts:
Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891)
Thomas Hardy, Tess of the D`Urbervilles (1893)
Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness (1899)
