Unlike the texts in other seminars, the poems, plays, short stories and novels to be discussed in this class have nothing in common except the fact that they have traditionally been regarded as “great literature” (which is not necessarily the same as ‘popular literature’). If you enjoy reading literary texts and feel that you have not had the opportunity to confront yourself with some of the ‘biggies’ of Eng. Lit., send me an email and suggest one (or several!).
The reading list will be compiled by the members of this seminar. There are, however, certain criteria of selection: the list should cover, within reason, the last 1000 years and all three major genres (drama, poetry, narrative prose); it must be part of "the literary canon"; and it should not contain texts commonly done at school. Historical, cultural and theoretical aspects will be considered as appropriate. The rest is up to you.
Browsing these (more or less arbitrary lists) may be helpful:

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
