Der 2008 von Claire Kramsch und Anne Whiteside vorgeschlagene Begriff der symbolischen Kompetenz ist in vielfältiger Form von Forschenden aufgenommen worden: In Deutschland hauptsächlich als Aufforderung, mit diskursanalytischem Ansatz literarische Texte im Sprachunterricht einzusetzen; in den USA als Anregung, von Anfang an stylistische Variation zu lehren, und die historische und politische Wahrnehmung der Studierenden zu fördern. Das Seminar wird sich mit diesem Begriff auseinandersetzen und sein Potential für den FSU erforschen.

Gute, zumindest passive, Englischkenntnisse werden vorausgesetzt, da zwar die Lehr- und Diskussionssprache Deutsch sein wird, aber die Folien und Lektüre, sowie die exemplarischen Daten auf Englisch vorliegen.
