Of the three courses in Profile Module 8 this should be taken first, as it functions as an introduction to the module. The other two courses in the module assume knowledge from this course and build upon that knowledge.
The course offers an historical survey of methods of teaching English as a foreign language from 1950 to the present day and emphasises the linguistic and didactic premises underlying the various methods. The course will conclude by demonstrating the hybrid nature of much current English language teaching and show how the various methods reviewed have influenced textbook design to the present day.
Two students will be expected to demonstrate a method each week in a brief presentation. Students will also be expected to keep their own personal diary of the course.
