The life-stories of fictional beings have always attracted writers and readers. The novel of development (also called Bildungsroman) has been among the most important subgenres of narrative fiction at least since the 19th century. The genre has demonstrated an astonishing flexibility, having been used for the most diverse purposes, having incorporated various aesthetic programmes and been subject to all sorts of variations. In this seminar, we will read five novels to trace the characteristic features as well as the variations in that genre. We will also discuss the concept of 'genre' in a more theoretical sense.
