In Cervantes' Novelas ejemplares (1613) erscheint die Gattung Novelle als erzählerisches Experimentierfeld, auf dem weniger "unerhörte Begebenheiten" (Goethe) erprobt werden, als vielmehr unerhörte Perspektiven. Darunter fallen nicht zuletzt marginale Standpunkte mit ihrer besonderen Sprache: die Delinquenz, die Verstellung, das Exil, die Krankheit, der Wahn. "Meine Absicht war, mitten in unsere Gesellschaft einen Billardtisch zu stellen, an den jeder, ohne durch den Einsatz Schaden zu erleiden, zum Zeitvertreib treten könne..." schreibt der Autor in der Vorrede. Bis heute verblüfft die Mobilität, die auf Cervantes' narrativem Spieltisch herrscht. Die Lektüre der "exemplarischen" kann durch ausgewählte Novellen aus dem Don Quijote ergänzt werden. Wenn möglich, soll auch ein Blick auf die romantische Rezeption dieser Novellistik geworfen werden.
