In this seminar we will deal intensively with the neuronal mechanisms underyling orientation behaviour. For this purpose, each sub-topic will be prepared with an introductory lecture by the organiser followed by student presentations on three topic areas:
1. Behavioural observations,
2. sensory basis, and
3. neuronal control or orientation.
In the area of behavioural observations, the orientation abilities of different animal groups ranging from insects to humans will be discussed. Second, the sensory systems underlying orientation behaviour and their specific adaptations will be reviewed. Finally, the third part discusses which neuronal mechanisms transforming the sensory signals to observable orientation behaviour. These mechanisms range from simple reflex-like connections between sensory and motor system to orientation behaviour controlled by higher cognitive processes and learning.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

Participants are expected to read the literature in advance and actively participate in the discussions as well as to present at least one paper or textbook chapter. The seminar will be held in English. Brief summaries of the presentations will be provided and the presentations will be followed by a group discussion.
