Pathos (künstlerische Inszenierung von Affekten) ist ein Konzept, das in ästhetischen Debatten immer wieder auftaucht - was nichts daran ändert, daß der Begriff Pathos in der Rede über Literatur seit ca. zweihundert Jahren fast durchgehend negativ besetzt ist. Die an Umdeutungen und -Wertungen reiche Geschichte dieses Begriffs soll im Seminar anhand exemplarischer Texte der Rhetorik, Poetik und allgemeinen Ästhetik nachgezeichnet werden. Gefragt wird nach der Einheit des Begriffs, seiner Herkunft aus der antiken Ethik, seiner Stellung in der Rhetorik, seinem Verhältnis zur Lehre vom Erhabenen, seinem antithetischen Verhältnis zur Ironie. Auf dem Programm stehen u. a. Aristoteles (Rhetorik und Poetik), Pseudo-Longin (Vom Erhabenen), Kant, Schiller und Hegel.
Zur Vorbereitung:
Lektüre der beiden aristotelischen Schlüsseltexte Poetik 1-18 (Kern der Tragödientheorie) und Rhetorik, II, 1-11 (sogenannter "Affektkatalog").Einen Überblick über die Begriffsgeschichte bietet der Art. "Pathos" in: Ritter / Gründer (Hrsg.), Historisches Wörterbuch der Philosophie.
