261006 On liberty (S) (SoSe 2008)

Contents, comment

The question of this seminar is what, politically speaking, freedom is. People under dictatorial regimes are said to lack freedom, western states, in particular the USA, pride themselves on the freedom their citizens enjoy. However, political philosophers and political theorists do not at all agree on what this freedom amounts to. The seminar will pursue this discussion through the last fifty years or so, with the aim of reaching a concept of political freedom that is both clear and descriptively useful. Among the authors discussed will be I. Berlin, F. Hayek, G. MacCallum, G. Cohen, R. Geuss.
The seminar will be held in English.
