Eine Studienexkursion wird im Seminar gemeinsam geplant, inhaltlich vorbereitet und im Anschluss reflektiert. Ausgangspunkt der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung ist die eigene Anschauung vor Ort: Die persönliche Begegnung mit gegenwärtigen räumlichen Konfigurationen eröffnet den Zugang zu konkreten historischen Räumen und ihren Deutungen. Durch die systematische Schärfung des Blicks unterwegs werden kulturelle Ausdrucksformen, geografische Bedingungen und politische Strukturen vom Mittelalter bis in die Moderne sichtbar und analysierbar.
Im Zentrum stehen die Erkundung und kritische Einordnung von Erinnerungslandschaften, Gedächtnisorten, Gedenkstätten und Sammlungen sowie die Frage, wie Geschichte im Stadtraum und in Museen erzählt, ausgestellt und vermittelt wird. Neben einem Termin im Westpreußischen Landesmuseum in Warendorf ist Danzig/Gdańsk ein zentraler Zielort der mehrtägigen Exkursion Ende Juli.
